What's lysozyme?
Lysozyme, also known as muramidase, is a naturally occurring enzyme found in bodily secretions such as tears, saliva, and milk. It functions as an antimicrobial by cleaving the peptidoglycan (amino acid/ sugar)
component of bacterial cell walls, which leads to cell death.
The antimicrobial theory
1.As nonspecific immune factors exist in body fluids and tissues, lysozyme participates in a variety of immune responses.
2.Lysozyme is a 1,4-β-N-acetylmuramidase that enzymatically cleaves a glycosidic linkage in the peptidoglycan component of bacterial cell walls, which results in the loss of cellular membrane integrity and cell death.
